The Remastered Helluva Boss Pilot – A Radical Reintroduction

This is an analysis and a review of a remake of a pilot for an animated series that contains content aimed at mature audiences, including:

•       Strong profanity
•       Strong cartoon violence, including blood and gore
•       Explicit sexual references, including one hidden moment of sexual intercourse
•       One strong drug reference
•       Flashing lights
•       Hellish imagery

Before beating Catherine: Full Body for the seventh time, resulting in the Alternate Katherine ending [5] [16], I was surprised to see the remake of the Helluva Boss pilot titled “Mission: Zero” uploaded onto Vivienne Medrano’s YouTube channel about a month after its premiere serving as a reintroduction on Prime Video [45] [78], which is the same platform you can finally watch the first two episodes of the second season of Hazbin Hotel [77]. Despite the constant fear of online persecution solely for my opinions as I reflect on some of the times when I was cyberbullied [10] [92], I am thankful that there are tender-hearted content creators who understand and respect how I feel about Medrano’s Hellaverse being a form of relief for me during the hard times I went through in the 2020s [1] [65]. After all, I strongly believe in the healing powers of writing and comedy [15] [88] [89] [90] [91]. After tittering at the hilarity of the fourth volume of Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Deserted Island Diary and feeling emotionally grasped by the third volume of Your Name [71] [72], I shall taste the treats, as well as the tricks, in “Mission Zero” [45]. And of course, there will be some comparisons between the standalone reintroduction that was summoned in 2025 and the original pilot from late 2019 [45] [49] [50], much like comparing the first Ratchet & Clank game from 2002 to its reimagining from 2016 [73] [74].

It will certainly be interesting to compare “Mission: Zero”, the second introduction of the prime concept of Helluva Boss in honour of its release on Prime Video a month ago to the original pilot that grabbed our attention six years ago [45] [49]. Once again, let us get damned all the way back to the series’ roots…that have been rebloomed! [75] [78] [79]

Just like in the original pilot, “Mission: Zero” is focused on the Immediate Murder Professionals in a business meeting [45] [49] [50]. First of all, I really like how Blitzo’s opening monologue is a jab at the religious belief in Hell being an enteral punishment for sinners and establishes that the VivziePop version is just a realm that is just another regular modern society aside from how his antiheroic impulsivity remains strangely charming in a Brandon Rogers way [45]. Secondly, there goes Moxxie. Being skeptical as the straight man of the trio [49] [50]. As for his wife, I would let her use her catchphrase, “It’s Millie Time!” on a mission, despite Blitzo’s objection [45], since her essence of female empowerment has not gained enough appreciation due to the accusations of misogyny against the series [4]. But alas, the love between her and her husband Moxxie is always to die for [45] [48] [49] [50] [52] [61]. Lastly, Loona is once again the apathetic one who is barely in a good mood, especially when being babied by her adoptive father, but is still a fan favourite and her hostility is more tolerable in “Mission: Zero”, aside from how it seems like she does not have syphilis after all [45] [49] [50]. It is admittedly refreshing to see the series at its roots again but in a canonised way and the portrayals of the three imps, as well as Loona, is a prime example of that.

“Sorry, I f***ed your husband.” – Blitzo (for the third time) [45] [49] [53]. Helluva Boss. [45]

Moxxie is not as confrontational to Loona in “Mission: Zero” as he was in the pilot [45] [49] [50] which makes me suspect that there can be an on-screen moment of them getting along and gaining some new character developments at some point in the third season. And of course, the way Millie defends Moxxie is faithful to her role as the straight man’s wife who gets equal opportunities within a delightful dose of feminism in the pilot. [45]

 

I suppose I ought to address the elephant…or in this case, the owl demon in the room. I can see that the Stolas in “Mission: Zero” is meant to erase any traces of the possibility of him being an antagonist during the development of the first season besides his sly demand for a political candidate preaching about climate change to be assassinated after the acclaim of the original pilot back in late 2019 [45] [49] [50], but it is understandable why some of my fellow viewers detest his excessive horniness overshadowing his other specific traits in the retelling. Pity the same swarm of censor bleeps from his dirty beak has deemed the advertising of the series on Prime Video being uncensored misleading [7] [64], but it is still part of the edgy charm of the original pilot and there was at least some build-up constructed by how angry he sounded about his dearest imp nicking his grimoire at the start of the telephone conversation [45] [49] [50]. But still, it is vital that he gains some highly effective character progression, as well as new chances to sing amazingly [3] [68], after the loss of his royal title in “Mastermind” and the separation from his daughter in “Sinsmas” throughout the third season, especially in terms of rebuilding his relationship with the Blitzster [44] [52] [76]. And yes, he must not hammer himself down with a victim mentality, which worked for Heidi Turner from South Park one time [41].

Well, at least I can safely say that my owl daddy’s thirst for the Blitzster is nowhere near as unsettling as Fred Figglehorn claiming that Judy’s lip gloss partially smells like abstinence and sniffing her stolen Beanie Baby after lying about knowing her grandmother [29] [30] [45] [64]. More importantly, he ought to at least try to be a better person in his new life in Imp City in Season Three [52]. I believe in the guy. [45]

What about the smaller roles in quite a big reimagining? The gang of menacing full-grown goons in “Mission: Zero” are simply there to be one-dimensional thugs, much to my amusement [45], but it is understandable why some hazbeans would prefer the role of the main target, whether they would be intentional or unintentional, being played by Eddie, the foul-mouthed kid from the pilot as there is some irony put into his overall character [49] [50]. Speaking of irony, Medrano must have been a good sport about a Hellaverse version of herself getting run over by the IMP van and bleeding to death during the montage near the end of the retelling [45], which is more extreme than Will Wright, the creator of SimCity and The Sims, being an antagonist in The Simpsons Game [25]. Additionally, an animated counterpart of Brandon Rogers vows to avenge her, leading to some coemption between him and Brennon Ragers from “Seeing Stars” [45] [51]. Like her debut that featured her original design in the pilot [49] [50], Stella is shocked to see Blitzo accidentally crash her tea party in “Mission: Zero” [45]. As assuming as it is to spot extra characters in an insane situation or as unacceptable as some of their treatments can be, I still hope that a future minisode of Helluva Shorts can perhaps go into depth on Striker and Stella’s antagonistic alliance besides two failed assignments or present Vassago as the caring uncle figure Octavia needs [44] [51] [52] [54] [55].

The bad guys are about as subtle about being bad guys as the chorus of the song by Akon and The Lonely Island known as “I Just Had Sex” is about having sex [45] [80]. As previously mentioned, there is at least some cleverness added to Eddie’s character in the original pilot as it would not be expected to see him fake his supposed death and swear at IMP in a snarky and sharp-witted manner, as well as how he was the right target after all [49] [50]. [45]

Who is the mysterious new character who is likely to appear in the third or fourth season? So far, they are only a silhouette [45] [79]. Judging by their position in this shot, it is likely that they will be another antagonistic Goetia character who might as well be a sibling of Stolas [53]. [45]

So, how funny do I find the humour and how do I find the way “Mission: Zero” is written in general aside from the portrayals of the main and minor characters [45]? The cutaway gags of possible plans to kill a bunch of crooks are done better as they are much more consistent to the main plot, thus not ending up as much as a template for a Family Guy episode [49] [50] [87], compared to the use of flashbacks in the original pilot. I am thankful that the vile R-word has not been used by any character in the remake, but I sensed some satire during the moment when Blitzo disapproved of profanity around Loona, provoking Moxxie into pointing out his hypocrisy [45]. The moment when Blitzo and Millie were like, “Kill them all! Kill them all!” is a vague reminder of killing every single sim in The Sims 2 or The Sims 4 [26] [27] [43], but still, wouldn’t the efforts to kill children work better in a crossover with the messed-up puzzle adventure game known as “Kindergarten” [22] [62] [69] [70]? As always, the writing of Helluva Boss may not be as impactful and emotionally mature as the non-linear story in Catherine: Full Body [5] [45] [46] [51] [54] [55], but as always, I would highly appreciate not getting shouted at or called hurtful names for simply being a fan of Hazbin Hotel and its sister series [90] [91].

Whether you prefer the quirky mockumentary format in the pilot or the well-paced flow of a usual episode of the main series with certain huge chunks of the pilot in “Mission: Zero” [45] [49] [50], be sure to make Helluva Boss new fans who happen to have tuned into the series on Prime Video feel welcome if you have considered yourself a fan since late 2019/early 2020. [45]

Ummmmm…kids still die for free, right [49] [50]? That is pretty much the case in Kindergarten [22] [62] [69] [70]. [49] [50]

All hail the awesome visuals of the Hellaverse! The animation in the original pilot is lively in terms of movement [49] [50], but looks quite rough in terms of visual appeal, compared to the big upgrade with the aid of ToonCity in “Mission: Zero” [45]. The backgrounds of the IMP Office and Stolas and Stella’s Mansion are indeed a glow up from their original designs in the pilot and the outside of Ozzie’s, the club in the Lust Ring that debuted in the seventh episode of the first season, makes a cameo in the montage [45] [48] [49] [50]. The characters’ movements are once again vigorous, especially during the scenes of the imps’ ideas for slaying their targets and the montage, in contrast to the meeting table, chairs, file cabinet, and photo frames simply jolting in sync with some PASSIONATE FORCINATION [45] [46]! Other exceptional effects include the eye-catching Pride Ring flames on candles during Stolas’ romantic moods, the menacing glow in the imp’s eyes, and smoke from explosions and the IMP van’s tyres [45]. As always, the animation in Helluva Boss, especially after its upgrade in the middle of the second season [47], is fantastic, elevating that sense of escapism for animation admirers in their late teens, twenties, and thirties and the same applies to the first season of Hazbin Hotel and the samples of the second one in previews [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] [37] [38].

Remember Moxxie’s shotgun suddenly turning into a sniper rifle in the original pilot [49] [50]? I can imagine Deadpool, Blitzo’s brother from another mother, scolding the animation team if such an error happened during one of his killing sprees [23] [24] [85]. [49] [50]

It is a bummer that there is no reprise of “Oh, Millie” [49] [50], but the rock version of the IMP Jingle that plays throughout the montage at the end of the second pilot…rocks [45]! And yes, the original jingle returning on the telly in the reimagining is a bonus treat. Another aspect of the montage is how two shots consist of a Ben-Day Dots effect that you would notice in Pop Art, which fascinates me and has further increased the overall artistic value of the series [14] [31]. [45]

Overall, I consider “Mission: Zero” a competent second introduction of one of my coping mechanisms in the 2020s [45], but I am not against a fellow sinner preferring the decanonised original pilot from the times near the very end of the 2010s for their own legitimate reasons [49] [50] [64]. Besides, there is still a place in my heart for the first pilot, yet both pilots have their pros and cons [7] [64]. Along with the first season of Lackadaisy and the third seasons of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss [8] [9] [40] [67] [88] [89], we are waiting for the launch of Project Rene in hopes of the spirit of The Sims not being tarnished after a controversial buyout [39] [63] [93] [94], but simmers who are anxious about the future of the franchise can always stick to fascinating mods for their copies of The Sims 2 as if the “simpler” times of being a simmer never left [11] [12] [13] [17] [18] [19]. Autistic people like me still need some forms of escapism during ongoing mistreatment, double standards, and derogatory misinformation that make us feel like second-class garbage to the neurotypical public in real life [2] [6] [20] [21] [81], whether it would be relishing in a rehash of old, cherished memories or experiencing a new addition to a beloved franchise. Moreover, I shall look forward to watching the second season of Hazbin Hotel on Prime Video [66] [90] [91], along with a swell time at this year’s MCM Comic Con in Birmingham next month [42], with my hopes for the third season of Helluva Boss held up high [8] [9]. Stay sinful!

Aside from the third season of Helluva Boss to consist of the same charm as the first one with some consistency regarding the events of the second one [8] [9] [48] [54], especially the Christmas special that also served as the season finale [44] [52], there is also hope that the next few Helluva Shorts will be about as competent as the first, fourth and seventh ones [56] [58] [61] (or at least as passable as the third, fifth and sixth ones [57] [59] [60]). In the meantime, it will not be long until Zootopia 2 hits cinemas [86]. And indeed, The Sims FreePlay is still going strong while Fortnite fighters are preparing to save Springfield from Kang and Kodos this November [28] [82]. [45]

Kudos to Alastor, the radio demon, for a musical recap of the first season of Hazbin Hotel in honour of Medrano’s 33rd birthday [38]. It is quite a shame that it looks like he will leave the hotel at some point in the second season [35], but who knows when he and Vox will battle one another [83] [90] [91]? Aside from that, I know Sir Pentious will form an adorable friendship with Emily in Heaven while Cherri Bomb laments as she hangs out at the hotel in Hell [32] [33]. No spoilers for me besides some previews, including one featuring a new song sung by the Vees please [66]! And have a Happy Halloween, but watch out for Michael Myers [84]! [38]

A Song Sung From The Forthcoming First Season Of Lackadaisy

This is an analysis of a preview of a forthcoming animated series that contains depictions of gambling and alcohol consumption. Reader discretion is advised.
After beating Catherine: Full Body for the fourth time, resulting in the True Freedom ending from the original Catherine [4] [12], I was starstruck at another short but sweet sample of the upcoming first season of Lackadaisy, along with two previews of the second season of Hazbin Hotel, including a scene featuring a new song titled “Gravity” [15] [28] [42] [43]. It has been confirmed within the preview of an episode of Lackadaisy – Season One that the series will be produced by GLITCH, the studio responsible for Murder Drones, The Amazing Digital Circus, and the Knights of Guinevere pilot [10] [16] [18] [28]. I personally do not doubt that the forthcoming cat’s meow, according to Talking Angela [25] [67] [68], will be another form of escapism, like how Sonic the Hedgehog has helped some people through their hardships and how the first season of Hazbin Hotel has helped me after the loss of my mother [46] [65] [66] [71]. As bronies and pegasisters continue to celebrate the 15^th anniversary of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic before the launch of the English dub of Pokémon Horizons: Season 3 - Rising Hope on BBC iPlayer [37] [53], let us head back to the probation era in the 1920s and see a little more of what the upcoming first season of Lackadaisy has to offer as a fusion of historical accuracy and creativity within an adaptation of an award-winning webcomic series [28] [29] [67] [68].

While the second and more ambitious revamp of the original Talking Tom app is carefree and cartoonishly zany, primarily for very young tablet users in this day and age [38] [50] [51], Lackadaisy is always sure to appeal to older animation admirers due to its historical essences and much more mature approach [27] [29] [67] [68]. Care to join us in your cat costumes, Moxxie and Mille [83]? [18]

And care to bellow an introductory monologue, Golden Joe [26]? [15] [28]

Much to my delight, the latest preview of Lackadaisy - Season One is a musical number [15] [28]. While “Gravity” is an angsty heavy rock vow to avenge Adam aggressively sung by Lute featuring him as a backup vocalist and a hallucination at some point in the second season of Hazbin Hotel [6] [42], “Last Call” is an upbeat jazz number that young adults who either obeyed or challenged the law that established the prohibition of alcohol in the roaring ‘20s would dance to [15] [28]. The vibes remind me of the moment when Alastor sang his song about a lost cause inside every demon in Hell in the Hazbin Hotel pilot and Tiana imagining her dream of running a restaurant in honour of her father’s dream as she sang “Almost There” in The Princess and the Frog [13] [33]. Mitzi’s lovely singing, performed by Willow Wilde [15] [28], is another reason why I consider her one of my favourite felines fromLackadaisy and I tend to compare her to the likes of Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, as well as Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel [13] [33] [67] [68]. Even if Lackadaisy - Season One might not be a full-on musical in comparison to Hazbin Hotel [3] [42], I shall yearn for more drama and wit based on the webcomics aside from what has been hinted at in the teaser [69] [70], previous public preview [76] [77], and the others exclusively for paid members [30] [31] [32].

Mitzi’s hobby of performing as a lead singer and banjo player is outstanding [15] [28]. And yes, I suspect that Alastor and Mimzy from Hazbin Hotel could sing a song in that genre of music at some point in the third or fourth season, aside from the possibility of Satan from the eleventh episode of the second season of Helluva Boss making a special guest appearance [8] [20] [33] [34]. As for the other kitties who made an appearance in the pilot [29], Zib is the clarinet player of the band who remains silent in the preview, along with Mordecai being bothered by a dancing couple, Viktor remaining another strong, silent type, and Sedgewick making an entrance in a sophisticated manner [15] [28]. [15] [28]

I knew the reappearance of Adam in Hazbin Hotel - Season Two would be an illusion like Pat Butcher reappearing as a figment of Peggy Mitchell’s mind before her death in the final episode of EastEnders she appeared in [6] [14] [65] [66]. Chances are that he could be even more dastardly and ruthless as a hallucination than how he was before his death in the first season due to Lute’s anger and grief. Speaking of an illusion of a deceased close one, could Mitzi see her deceased husband as a figment of her imagination at some point in the first season of Lackadaisy after the events of the pilot {28} [29] [67] [68]? [42]

What other aspects of the latest preview boost the cred of the upcoming season aside from the performance [15] [28]? Well, while the Vees are already being rather impactful main antagonists without a sign of the same controversy caused by Valentino in another preview of the second season of Hazbin Hotel [43] [65] [66], the cats’ reactions to the results of their gambling are another comedic aspect in the Lackadaisy series aside from what antics Rocky Rickaby may get up to, yet the two cats who get into a brawl are another aspect of drama aside from the car chase scene in the pilot [15] [28] [29]. No wonder some of us believe that Husk from Hazbin Hotel fits more into that universe instead of Vivienne Medrano’s Hellaverse [33] [65] [66], even though he died at some point in the 1970s [19]. Chances are that the scene of the classic clubbing at Little Daisy Café either takes place before the events of the pilot or is entirely imagined by Mitzi shortly after them [15] [28] [29]. The interior of the speakeasy is about as illuminated as the redesign of the main hotel lobby in the second season of Hazbin Hotel and a lot is going on during the musical number [3] [15] [28] [65] [66], which shows the amount of ambition put into the scene to artistically establish those “partying in the ‘20s” vibes, much to the expectational skills of the animation team and background artists, which will be further explained in a jiffy.

Looking more carefully at the moment of Atlas sitting with his drink on his paw [15] [28], chances are that the scene takes place at some point before he and his wife meet Rocky in the streets where he plays his violin alone, which is shown in the Season One teaser [69] [70]. This speculation is due to his absence in the latest preview [15] [28]. [15] [28]

If only the Alfred Alfer movie could have been a little more like the Christmas special known as “Alfred’s Story of Christmas” [80], so there would have been somehow clever writing, especially some engaging conversational humour, that would not have been overshadowed by excessive crudeness, especially all the graphic sexual acts, and uncomfortably flashy effects in the final that was also overshadowed by Trumpism [72] [73] [81]. On a lighter note, I can already see that the first season of Lackadaisy will be a mild balance of light-heartedness and the kind of drama you would find in a crime fiction set in the Prohibition era of the 1920s in St. Louis [29] [67] [68]. [15] [28]

 
The animation in the musical preview of an episode of the first season of Lackadaisy is spectacular and you can tell that it is not cheap to complete [15] [28]. Aside from a few frame rate issues, you can tell the characters’ movements are remaining life-like in terms of animating anthropomorphic cats throughout the forthcoming first season, but it will take more than just the same excellent quality of the animation from the pilot and first short to make the first season exceptional [29] [69] [70] [76] [77]. How the spotlight shines on Mrs. May before the glasses held by her audience are raised somehow reminds me of the musical number at Ozzie’s in the first part of the Season One finale of Helluva Bossbecause of the colour palette at the start of her performance and the sparkle and dust effects added to it are quite mesmerising [15] [24] [28]. I love how her dress glistens like a Cullen’s skin in the sunlight [55] [56] [58]. Sorry, traditional vampire fans [49]. The look of the alcohol that is poured into glasses after Sedgewick’s entrance could make Conker the Squirrel’s mouth water [15] [28] [36]. Tracy J. Butler, the creator of the webcomics, has expressed how proud she is of the animation team and we should be proud of them too [15]. The same applies to the animation styles of the cartoons known as the “Glitch Originals” [28].

There is something quite enchanting about seeing a world of anthropomorphic cats in a world set in the Roaring ‘20s in colour [15] [28], yet I still wonder if Alastor and Mimzy are familiar with it [20]. [15] [28]

This colour palette may remind a hazbean of the Lust Ring of Hell [23] [24], but the spirit of Little Daisy Café is alive in a seemingly more respectable interpretation of the United States [15] [28], compared to Octavia’s muddled journey through Holly’s Wood [22], during this musical number [15] [28]. [15] [28]

 
We have admired animated adventures and cherished the creative impacts of them for over one hundred years [74] [75]. Cartoon cats have come a long way since the debut of Felix the Wonderful, Wonderful Cat back in 1919, which we celebrated the 100^th anniversary of in 2019 [59]. I am up for six episodes in one television-length season of Lackadaisy as much as I am up for a prequel to Catherine: Full Body based on the events of the Japan-exclusive novel known as “Catherine: The Mysterious Tale of Rapunzel” [15] [60], as well as an anime or manga adaptation of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss [5] [7] [61] [62] [78] [79]. Besides, the R-rated musical cred of Medrano’s Hellaverse is still helping me through life without my mother [1] [2] [3] [34] [42] [71]. Aside from the development of Lackadaisy, the first season of The Gaslight District, another toon from GLITCH is currently in pre-production after the success of its pilot [11] [17] [28]. It will not be long until MySims: Cozy Bundle becomes available on Apple Arcade, two months before the English dub of the third season of Pokémon Horizons is released on Netflix this January [52] [54]. In the meantime, the next chapter of a hotel for sinners to be redeemed at awaits us on Prime Video shortly after the launch of Fizzarolli minifigures in blind boxes known as “Fizzies” from Stylish Occult near this Halloween [3] [47] [48] [65] [66]. Please give us a full season of cats challenging the law against booze in the 1920s over a mentally unwell dog who is, unfortunately, associated with a Neo-Nazi ideology and does not even try to be a better person to inspiringly bloom from his trauma aside from using Donald Trump as a (misleading) source of empowerment any day [57] [63] [64] [72] [73]. Moreover, I still stand by the true intention of Hazbin Hotel besides the Vees’ aim to fiendishly misrepresent it and frame Charlie Morningstar as I am not one for questionable propaganda [3] [43] [65] [66]. Kudos to Christian Borle for his Vox cosplay at this year’s New York Comic Con though [21]. [82]

Of course, I am curious about the other two minisodes besides “Ingenue” as I firmly stand by how Lackadaisy is NOT a rip-off of Helluva Boss due to how the two properties are clearly set in different eras of time and that Lackadaisy was established long before Helluva Boss was [35] [67] [68] [69] [70] [74] [75]. If another straw finally breaks the camel’s back [40] [65] [66], I can always move on to the Lackadaisy fandom [15] [27] [28]. But still, Moxxie and Millie can join me in their kitty costumes if they wish [83].
