Can Shrek 5 Being Delayed To Summer 2027 Increase Its “Big Comeback” Cred?

Before many hazbeans were amazed at this year’s cool Summer Helluva Boss merchandise of Blitzo and his co-stars as pirates (who probably throw the nicest things out windows [40]) [42] [80], it was confirmed that Shrek 5 has been delayed once again to Summer 2027 [14] [27] [68] [96]. This second delay must be to ensure a more effective outcome and a better chance of successful marketing whilst avoiding competition with Avengers: Doomsday…or just because of fans predicting the plot [31], which I am, admittedly, no stranger to [100] [101] [102] [103] [104] [105] [106]. The new animation style in the teaser may have received quite a lot of backlash [45] [102] [103], but kudos to DreamWorks for striving against the use of artificial intelligence in their film developments as a sign of some lessons learned from the strikes in Los Angeles and New York that occurred two years ago [95]. And yes, the new designs for the characters, especially Shrek, are not that bad [94], but it is understandable why the animation in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish would be preferred [52] [102] [103]. Moreover, I guess there can be efforts to give the new style in Shrek 5 a glow-up, but not as drastically as Sonic the Hedgehog’s redesign for his cinematic origin [27] [57] [74], despite how concerningly costly it would be. After the release of the sixth episode of The Amazing Digital Circus and the reveal of a sneak peek of the upcoming seventh deadly minisode of Helluva Shorts [22] [81], let us discuss the potential of Shrek 5 once again [102] [103].

I would love to read a manga adaptation of Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss (or play a new Waterloo Road arcade game inspired by Demolition King and Crazy Hammer that lets you wreck the wretched school to win tickets [6] [8] [21] [32] [33] [98]) [106] [107], but I am a little nervous about the outcome of Shrek 5. Shortly before simmers try out the new Creators Kits for The Sims 4, known as the “Grange Mudroom” and “Essential Glam” Kits [86], let us discuss some theories on what awaits us in the upcoming revival since we have to await another year for its final outcome [14] [27] [68] [96]. In the meantime, I wish Conker: Live & Reloaded a happy belated 20^th anniversary and I am quite amazed at Verosika Mayday as a mermaid [42] [43]. [68]

 
A while ago, there was a theory that Felicia…may not be Felicia. Instead, she may be a teenage Farkle who came out as transgender at some point [51]. This is because the unnamed offspring in the teaser has brown eyes instead of blue eyes like Baby Felicia’s in Shrek The Third and Shrek Forever After [61] [62] [94]. However, the girl may still be Felicia as irises can change colour at some point after infancy [51]. I am up for one of Shrek and Fiona’s children coming out as transgender or non-binary or find a love interest of the same gender (who could be a human also cursed to become an ogre at night for a reason that will be explained later [59]) for some wholesome LGBTQIA+ vibes in the franchise which can also apply to the Big Bad Wolf coming out as genderfluid in a subtle manner [103] [104], despite how some members of the toxic anti-woke crowd would berate the writers for establishing a little more what is still needed in today’s society [7] [26] [108]. Whether that will be the case or not, it is vital that their portrayals try not too hard to be like Peaches in Ice Age: Continental Drift as a rebellious teenager seeking independence [25], despite having an overprotective parent is nothing new and is pretty much a clichéd trope, even though it can still be done decently for the sake of effective character development.

And if Shrek 5 gets closed-mindedly labelled as “woke” for being centred on activism for ogres’ rights to live happily ever after in a similar manner to rightful activism for homosexuals’ rights to marry someone of the same gender and trans rights being human rights [7] [26] [108], may I remind you that the Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2, an animated film that was released in 2004 [60] [63], could be the reason for that? [65]

 
Reflecting on the film being delayed for the second time due to a lot of public speculation of the plot [14], there is hope that the writing will at least be decent in certain ways, despite how uninspired the joke in the teaser was to some of us [102] [103], even though notable examples of entertainment on television were parodied in Shrek 2 and plenty of us remember Far Far Away Idol [60] [64]. Slapping use of modern technology and social media trends onto a medieval aesthetic at least works better in Horrible Histories as it enhances the series’ efforts to educate young people about historical events from immensely different time periods in a fun and quirky way [23], so there is hope that they do not overshadow new character explorations in a big revival of a beloved film franchise [102] [103]. Surely, Shrek 5 ought to begin with another storybook narrated by a certain character to give the audience a head start [59] [60] [61] [69]. Aside from that, there is hope that it can be at least more effective than Ice Age: Collision Course and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 in terms of the fifth film’s writing [24] [87], especially when it comes to new character developments and aspects of the universe of relentlessly mocking fairy tales that will be explained as we go along [59] [60] [61] [62].

As much as I found the second volume of Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Deserted Island Diary hilariously amusing [58], I sense potential in the fifth Shrek film providing some more effective samples of humour aside from Pinocchio’s involvement in what Shrek and his daughter are appalled at in the teaser trailer [94], such as references to some iconic moments in other films or perhaps video games [47]. But still, I would not mind a few references to memes as I fondly recall recognising Shuri exclaiming to T’Challa, “What are those?!” in Black Panther as a reference to one of those iconic trends from the Vine days [10] [90] [97], yet my fiancé did not recognise it at first. And yes, I would love to experience some new ASMR performed by Señor Puss [93] [100] [101], along with a hilarious moment of rick rolling [1089! [64]

Aside from only using a considerable amount of pop culture references, the most important aspect of the fifth film’s writing would be establishing some effective new character development, especially for Shrek and Fiona’s children, who, as previously mentioned, are aged up to teenagers [94] [102] [103]. Hopefully, their new character explorations will not be as clichéd as many episodes of All Grown Up! and definitely not as predictable [54]. [69]

I still believe Shrek and Fiona can be activists for all ogres to have the right to live happily ever after beyond the days of a possible civil war between an army of ogres and the army from Far Far Away back in King Harold’s day [15] [102] [103] [104] [105], which might be preferred over Shrek repeating the questionable forms of destructive parenting his own parents committed [17] [29] [100] [101]. As tacked on as this sounds, the big guy could find a long-lost relative who might as well be a younger cousin inspired by the original version of him voiced by Chris Farley during the first film’s rocky production, but without disrespecting Farley’s legacy [11] [48] [89], which would be the polar opposite of Woody confronting another Woody who is a direct reference to the far more selfish and controversial version of him that was thankfully scrapped during the development of the first Toy Story film at some point in Toy Story 5 [12] [82], which might not happen due to some focus on the aged up triplets [94], but would still be quite interesting nonetheless and can be a big part of Fiona’s activism for ogres’ rights to live happily ever after [102] [103] [104] [105]. After all, the former princess of Far Far Away is proof that there is more than one way to live happily ever after and that it does NOT need to be exactly what your parents expected in terms of trying to figure out what is best for you [59] [60].

I know that a cousin of Shrek’s based on the scrapped version of him during his first film’s production struggles would be a sign of the franchise running out of ideas aside from the joke in the teaser trailer for Shrek 5 [11] [48] [67] [89], but perhaps said cousin can be voiced by Nicolas Cage to make up for how he regretted turning down the leading role that was later given to Mike Meyers [20], but still, the cousin must not be too much like Farley’s performances to avoid disrespecting his association with the first film’s development [11] [48] [67] [89]. [67]

 
Can the side characters’ motives in Shrek 5 be more satisfying than Diego and Shira simply talking about having kids and nothing further than that in Ice Age: Collision Course [24]? I might not be surprised if the ending of Shrek 5 will hint at a spin-off film centred on Donkey in the same way the ending of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish hinted at the upcoming fifth chapter of the main Shrek films [29] [52]. I am still up for Puss In Boots speaking Italian to honour Antonio Banderas’ trilingualism [85] [104] [105], but it would be more important that he has learned not to take what he has in his last life for granted and perhaps not be as overly egotistical as he tended to be in The Adventures of Puss In Boots [16]. And yes, he and Donkey can still make jabs at each other like frenemies would [60] [61] [62]. While Blitzo is probably shooting empty cans of “creepy” pasta by the tree in the Pride Ring of Hell where he learned about the use of Stolas’ grimoire when he and the former prince were children [40], we are still wondering how the main cast of the Shrek franchise can personally progress even further in Shrek 5 [100] [101] [102] [103] [104] [105], despite the risk of another shark being jumped, which was the case for Ice Age: Collision Course [24].

Aside from Puss and Donkey possibly gaining some new depth that can cast aside the frenemy status that can be more effective than unnecessary body swap in Shrek The Third [62] [100] [101], I still see potential in an older and wiser King Arthur of Far Far Away befriending Shrek and Fiona’s kids and possibly giving them advice in terms of feeling weighed down by labels but not letting it stand in the way of achieving goals, showing that he has stuck to his words of wisdom and grown as a person throughout his royal duties. Perhaps there ought to be some evidence of him being Fiona’s cousin aside from the narrator’s claim from the video game based on Shrek The Third [3]. [71]

There may have been a missed opportunity of Fiona expressing sorrow over never finding her true love as a human in the daytime but receiving some reassurance from certain members of her ogre tribe to repay her for her nobility and leadership at night in the alternate timeline in Shrek Forever After [61], but as an ogre who got her happily ever after in an unexpected way, I bet she can advocate for other ogres rights to get theirs. In the meantime, what could Deadpool be up to in Avengers: Doomsday, the upcoming chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is set to be released in December 2026 [31] [56]? For now, he might as well give me another shoulder massage whilst bragging about his destruction of the version of Waterloo Road Comprehensive School in Scotland once again [8] [98] [99]. [70]

 
We have a favourite fearless hero [44] [52], but who will be a new fearful villain? Surely, a new antagonist can be a specifically designed witch that goes beyond the generic green-skinned tyrants inspired by the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and casts spells in rhymes [61] [88], thus being a reference to the original children’s book by William Steig and possibly cursing a new love interest for one of the ogre triplets in the same way Fiona was cursed [5] [59]. More consistently, the mysterious interpretation of the Grim Reaper, who is one of the antagonists in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, might go after the fearless feline’s last life once again…or reflect on his presence during the death of King Harold (after empathising with Greg the Grim Reaper’s rants about cats [43]) [52] [62]. But in terms of the main film chronology, I am sure Prince Charming’s father can be introduced to avenge him and Fairy Godmother after years of grieving from a possible divorce and the loss of a son…and team up with Lancelot, who had graduated from that dreadfully mean-spirited high school in Shrek The Third [104] [105]. While Lilypad, the main antagonist of Toy Story 5, is a jab at kids playing with mobile devices more often than playing with toys these days [83] [84], a new threat in Shrek 5ought to be a compelling one to solve.

Chances are that the prime conflict in Shrek 5 might not be as impactful as Rumpelstiltskin’s misdeeds of being a despicable con artist and the term “Be Careful What You Wish For” in Shrek Forever After [61], but I still see potential in it being a follow-up to Fairy Godmother’s prejudiced belief in ogres not being cut out to live happily ever after in Shrek 2 [60] [63]. I also suspect that the prejudice against imps and hellhounds can somehow come to an end if Stolas gets his royal title, powers and custody of Octavia back and marries Blitzo in his rightfully restored mansion, especially after learning to be a better father and love interest in the series’ finale of Helluva Boss [37] [39] [40]. In the meantime, I am hyped for the next Helluva Short and I would love to see the next one or two centred on Fizzarolli’s relationship with Asmodeus, the Lord of the Lust Ring that could temporarily be on the rocks…but ultimately be maintained with some post-apology intimacy after the events of “Mastermind” and during the events of “Sinsmas” as another Christmas special [28] [36] [37] [38] [39]. [63]

Is the fifth Shrek film doomed to fail, even after another delay and its development hell [102] [103]? Well, I am willing to give it a fair shot in June 2027 [14] [27] [68] [96]. But right now, there is concern regarding the production as the efforts to rewrite, redub, and reanimate certain scenes will not only continue a development hell but may result in the progress being almost as insanely difficult as the production of the first Shrek film throughout the second half of the ‘90s [11] [67]. Can you imagine living in an alternate universe where Steven Spielberg never lost his chance to be credited as an executive producer of a 2D animated film based on the children’s book by William Steig that featured Bill Murray as the voice of the titular character and Steve Martin playing the role of his four-legged sidekick in the ‘90s [5] [67] [72]? In this one, there is hope that the revival of the main Shrek film series will help the ogre rise from the truckload of meme bait [19], including a weird Slender: The Eight Pages wannabe known as “Swamp Sim” [30] [50] [55], as he regains his movie star status for the sake of more than just nostalgia [68] [94] [102] [103]. In the meantime, the pilot of a new animated series based on Homestuck, the web fiction series that ran from 2009 to 2016 [46], will be released this September and the second season of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake awaits fellow animation admirers on HBO Max soon [18] [34] [41] [91] [106] [107].

At least Deadpool and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish were critically acclaimed after surviving their development limbos and the fourth attempt to produce and release an official Sonic the Hedgehog movie was worth it after three failed ones [4] [13] [73] [77] [78] [79] [92]. Aside from our hopes for upcoming installations and how we can keep expressing creativity [9], despite missing the simpler times of witnessing the classics [49], we must keep being kind to those in need and be thankful for what has helped us through the troubles in the 2020s [35] [53], such as the outstanding outcome and iconic success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its well-deserved follow-ups [74] [75] [76]. We can still be critical, but we must remain aware of lines that should not be crossed [1] [2]. A big part of who I am these days will be gone if I finally decide to stop being a fan of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss due to the constant negativity tarnishing my love for them [106] [107], but there must be some new way to elevate my proactivity if that happens in the near future. [66]
