Can Ice Age: Boiling Point Be A New Turning Point in 2027?

Shortly after I fondly read the fifth volume of Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Deserted Island Diary [42], something caught my eye. It was no other than the reveal of the official title and logo for the sixth main Ice Age film at Destination D23 [8] [21]. And yes, the reveal of the logo for an upcoming seemingly original adventure from Disney caught my other eye on the same day [6]. I know what you are probably thinking. Really? The fifth film, known as “Ice Age: Collision Course”, is considered the second shark-jumping film and the first spin-off film had downgraded animation and so on [2] [12] [34] [51] [52]. Why do we need a sixth movie [8] [21]? Please let the franchise go extinct already! Despite that, I see a little potential in Boiling Point being an improvement, compared to Collision Course [12], yet chances are that it will be about as satisfying as Continental Drift was to many of us [13]. As animation admirers are disturbed by the freaky fourteenth episode of Salad Fingers and animal crossers continue to nurture the campsites that were backed up after the closure of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp or started from scratch after the release of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete [10] [37] [39] [40], let us take caution as we discuss how Ice Age: Boiling Point can either redeem the franchise, despite the closure of Blue Sky Studios in 2021 [21], or just be another post-trilogy addition [8].

Like I have stated before, just because a follow-up or spin-off is unneeded, does not automatically mean that it will be bad [53]. I am not overly defending the idea of another Ice Age movie, considering that the shark was jumped in 2016 [12], but there is hope that the creative team are at least trying to follow a recipe for redemption, especially after the closure of Blue Sky Studios urged the property to move onto 20^th Century Animation [21]. [8]

Aside from hopes for improved animation by the power of a bigger budget and more effective technology in Boiling Point, compared to the visual downgrade in The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild [2], can new character arcs be better too? To be honest, I would not be surprised if Shira will be pregnant in Boiling Point as all she was noted in Collision Course for was the possibility of her and Diego having a child of their own [12] [34], as well as their amusing failed attempt at seeming friendly towards two kids. However, it seems more likely that Sid will become a father in the film instead due to his parenting (that later got him into trouble) in Dawn of the Dinosaurs and how happy he was to finally get a girl (in a way Elsa from Frozen would disapprove of [11]) in Collision Course [12] [14]. As uninspired as the same pregnancy trope from Dawn of the Dinosaurs being a character progression standpoint in Boiling Point, it is still vital that the number of comic relief characters can be reduced for the sake of overall humour being somehow effective and perhaps give some side characters a better role, compared to their underwhelming and underdevelopment ones in the previous films [3]. Moreover, I suppose a nice friendship between Brooke and Shira can bloom in Boiling Point [21], despite how their roles as love interests served a less reasonable purpose than Ellie’s in the main series [3] [12] [13].

I never hated the idea of Sid and Brooke being a couple, but I just wish there could have been a much and steadier and more natural growth before the romance bloomed [12] [18]. It can be argued that their love that happened so unrealistically fast was at least more in-character for Sid than the scrapped one-sided romance between him and Sylvia though [28]. Could he and Brooke be on the rocks that can eventually be cleared out as a new way of character progression in Boiling Point [8] [21]? That could not only flesh out Brooke’s character more but also provide a little long-overdue realism in their relationship [12]. [18]

Diego and Shira eventually believed they would be great parents after they managed to seem friendly to the two kids they accidentally scared in Collison Course [12], which is why it seems more likely that Shira will be the next to bear an offspring in Boiling Point [8] [21]. [26]

 
What about the other members of the herd founded by Manny, Sid, and Diego? I am kind of hoping that the same “overprotective parent” trope regarding Manny’s love for his family will not be repeated as it has been a little overdone [12] [13], yet I suppose there can be a moment of Peaches learning about why he tends to be that way, resulting in another flashback of the loss of his previous family for the sake of consistency [15] [22]. I also think her husband Julian ought to somehow shed his “clone of Johnny from Hotel Transylvania” skin [3], especially after earning Manny’s respect before marrying his daughter, as he could be supportive of Shira or Brooke’s pregnancy for some wholesomeness aside from his quirkiness [12]. I understand Crash and Eddie wanting to prove their herd that they can be capable of survival aside from their usual stupidity and how their alliance with Buck Wild helped them achieve that form of character development throughout The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild [2] [20], but I suspect they will still be the same nonsensical and risky duo, much to Mat Brunet’s dismay [3], if they ever decide to see their adopted sister and niece again [20]. I am willing to give the next chapter of the herd’s lives another chance in Ice Age: Boiling Point, but I do not EVER want to see Sid’s family again for a reason [3] [13].
 

Yes, it would be even more uninspired if Peaches and Julian have a baby of their own, resulting in Manny and Ellie becoming grandparents [12]. But still, a cliché can still be pulled off well if done the right way. Aside from that, perhaps Peaches can spiritually visualise her half-sibling in contrast to the compelling animation of the cave drawings representing Manny and his first family in the first movie [15] [19] [22]. [23]

Say what you want about Stolas from Helluva Boss being a less-than-perfect father to his daughter Octavia [29] [30] [31] [32], but at least he NEVER intentionally abandoned her, unlike the remorseless ways of Sid’s family dumping his grandma in Continental Drift and how it turned out that they migrated without him during the events of the first films on purpose [3]. [27]

Speaking of personal progressions, there is more to predict during the wait for Ice Age: Boiling Point [8] [21]. Why not bring back the baby from the first Ice Age movie, who never deserved all the hate he got, even if it was just a meme [3], as an adult leading a tribe of his own in a notably improved design for human beings in the Ice Age series [15] [24] [25]? Buck’s comeback alongside the opossums ought to be a decent balance between his loony nature and his relationship with Zee from The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild unless she remains spin-off material [2] [20]. Oh, and please, please, please! Do not leave Scrat’s cartoony antics out of the next main film! But wait! What about his adorable son from Scrat Tales [7] [17]? Well, perhaps Scratte, his rival/love interest from Dawn of the Dinosaurs, can return to show how she parents the little goober [14], which ought to be at least more effective than his Stella and Andrealphus simply did not offer support to Octavia in “Sinsmas”, the Season Two finale of Helluva Boss [32]. In fact, some new personal progressions ought to be more effective in the sixth main chapter in general. Surely, letting the main Ice Age series become a hexalogy can at least provide something notable within its revival (and hopefully no tacky references to social media [12]) besides following the same formula of a herd of prehistoric animals surviving a form of great danger [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [21].
 

Of course, the baby from the first film who ought to return as an adult in Boiling Point might as well be named “Roshan” in the credits [24]. Does Manny still have that necklace his father gave to him as a way to thank the herd for their nobility [15]? [25]

The loveable saber-tooth squirrel, who unintentionally formed the continents of the world and created our Solar System in Collision Course [3], is considered the series’ saving grace as his misadventures in the side plots have been a backup source of entertainment while the main ones in the fourth and fifth films were considered tiresome [12] [13]. It would make sense if the mother of Baby Scrat is Scratte [3] [7] [14] [17], right? [7]

Ice Age: Boiling Point is set to erupt in cinemas in February 2027 [8] [21]. Three months before that, Hexed could hopefully restore the glory Disney had during the period from the critical and commercial triumph of Frozen to the similar success of Encanto [6] [9] [11], aside from being an original film like Wish [47] [55]. And of course, we shall see how insane Deadpool’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday will be [54]. I am not the most optimistic about the upcoming sixth instalment of the main Ice Age franchise [21], so if it fails to make up for the flaws of the fifth chapter of the main saga, the franchise’s downfall might as well be displayed and documented in the prehistoric section of an animation museum, which would be the polar opposite of an animal crosser proudly viewing the collection of donated fossils at their museums [35] [36] [38]. Furthermore, I see bigger potential in Shrek 5 being an engaging new chapter under certain conditions [51] [52], yet there is ultimately nothing wrong with a bit of both franchises in the second half of the 2020s, aside from wishes for no further progression after what could have been a true sendoff years ago. I am looking at you, The Simpsons [4] [49].

I also see bigger potential in Toy Story 5 being a revival in the second half of the 2020s [48]. It will be quite amusing to hear Conan O’Brien voice a potty-training toy named “Smarty Pants” in the events after Toy Story 4 [41] [45] [46] [48] [50]. In the meantime, the seventh deadly Helluva Short titled “Mission: Whacked Off” will be summoned in a few days [43], Rayfans are wishing Rayman a happy 30^th anniversary and I shall make more of my experience in Minecraft and Catherine: Full Body [1] [33] [44]. [48]

To plenty of us, the Ice Age series should have remained a trilogy in the 2000s or stopped at Continental Drift in honour of its 10^th anniversary in 2012 [13] [14] [15] [16]. But ultimately, we can hope that the series becoming a hexalogy in 2027 will be a little more than just nostalgia bait [8] [21]. Aside from our rights to express different opinions on media [51] [52] [53] [54], we must vow to ensure that innocent autistic people do NOT get treated like how Sid’s family treated him and his grandmother in real life [3] [5] [13] [27]. [19]
